About Dr. Rafat A. Abbasi
Rafat A. Abbasi, MD, FACOG is a highly respected physician at Columbia Fertility Associates in Washington, D.C. Dr. Abbasi practices reproductive endocrinology and infertility. She is especially interested in recurrent pregnancy loss and implantation failure.
Dr. Abbasi earned her medical degree at the Liaquat University of Health Sciences in Pakistan. She went on to complete her residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Towson, MD. Dr. Abbasi completed her fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., and the pregnancy research branch at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Abbasi has served on active duty in the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir, VA, and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX.
She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, reproductive endocrinology, and clinical reproductive immunology. Dr. Abbasi has been chosen annually by her peers as a Washingtonian magazine “Top Doc.”
Dr. Abbasi is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital. She is actively involved as a preceptor to first- and second-year medical students, and she continues her interest in clinical research with multicenter clinical trials.
Dr. Abbasi has been a board member of Rainbow Families DC, an LGBTQ organization. She is also a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health. In 2023, Dr. Abbasi was invited to join the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee on Healthcare for Underserved Women.
About Signey Olson
Signey Olson, DNP, CNM, WHNP-BC, FACNM (Pronouns She/They) is a board-certified nurse practitioner, certified nurse-midwife, and doctor of nursing practice at Columbia Fertility Associates in Washington, D.C. where she now practices clinically part-time, having been with the CFA team since 2011. She also serves as full-time faculty at Georgetown University.
Originally hailing from the Midwest, her educational background includes completion of degrees in nursing, political science, and community development from the College of St. Scholastica in Minnesota and her graduate and doctoral training through Frontier University and George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Her doctoral work focused on strategies to increase eating disorder screening within outpatient settings and how weight stigma may negatively impact clinical outcomes, particularly in the realm of reproductive health.
Clinically, she has spent her career working in reproductive endocrinology, fertility/IVF, and complex gynecology, providing evidence-based fertility care to people of all backgrounds in an individualized and culturally responsive environment, with a focus on members of the LGBTQIA+ community. She believes that healthcare is a partnership between providers and patients and is passionate about helping individuals feel empowered about their bodies by providing a strong foundation of patient education and honoring a diverse array of family, relationship, and lifestyle structures.
Her additional specialties include caring for gender-diverse individuals, the impact of trauma on the body, disordered eating patterns, and working to dismantle the far-reaching negative effects of weight and size stigma in the healthcare setting. Professionally, she is a Fellow and active member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives as well as an active member of NPWH, WPATH, and ASRM. She stays active in her professional community by authoring numerous texts on her areas of specialty and helping to develop national curriculum guidelines on health equity, gender-affirming hormones, and weight-inclusive care for medical education programs.
Patients can schedule with her for any fertility or gynecological-related consults or follow-up visits. She offers the same process of diagnostic testing and treatment as our physicians and has them available for collaborative care if the need arises.
About Dr. Preston Sacks
Preston Sacks, MD, FACOG – OB/GYN is a highly experienced fertility specialist at Columbia Fertility Associates in Washington, D.C.
A New Orleans native, Dr. Sacks earned his medical degree at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He went on to complete an obstetrics and gynecology residency and a reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sacks started working with the Columbia Fertility Associates team during his medical training, and he officially joined the practice in 1992.
Dr. Sacks has consistently been recognized by Washingtonian magazine as a top infertility specialist. He has been a clinical investigator on several trials of fertility medications and serves on the medical advisory board for MedStar Surgery Center.
