If you’re trying to conceive, the fall season brings you the best of both worlds – lots of fresh vegetables and fruits that fit well into a healthy, anti-inflammatory diet, as well as perfect weather for exercising.
5 Ways to Stay Fit This Fall
As you know, exercise is a top recommendation for anyone trying to “get healthy,” but it’s especially important for women who are trying to conceive. Over the past decade, science has learned a great deal about the relationships between healthy weight, insulin and hormone balance, as well as the importance of a healthy immune system, when it comes to fertility.
Diet and exercise are keys to all-of-the-above.
1) Skip the fast food and soda
If you’re just starting out on a healthier eating journey, take things at a realistic pace. Start by skipping fast food, soda and candy or those carb-/saturated fat-filled snacks that creep into the afternoon window between lunch and dinner.
Then, make a new healthy eating commitment each week until you’re on the balanced track…a simple way to shed that first layer of unwanted pounds, creating the healthy eating habits your body is craving. Check out our Favorite Health Eating Blogs for inspiration.
2) Join the Y(MCA)
Fertility treatments are expensive and often require skipping some of the monthly extras, like gym membership. The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington has spectacular health, fitness and wellness programs for adults – and it’s super affordable, too.
3) Join a hiking or walking (or fill-in-the-blank) club
The Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group welcomes hikers of all ages. If you haven’t gotten out to hike much, or you’re tired of the same ol’ trails, a club like this is a great way to get out there, meet others, and commit yourself to regular exercise. We like walking and hiking because it’s an exercise you can do before and during your pregnancy –as well as with a baby in tow.
Use meetup.com to search for an exercise group that suits your interests – and remember that accountability works wonders because you can’t talk yourself out of getting up, out and moving!
4) Join that Zumba class you’ve been wondering about
You’ve heard about Zumba forever and know you’d love it – but you’ve yet to commit. Now’s the time. Zumba is a great way to get a cardio workout and have a heck of a lot of fun while doing it. Best of all, you can take some of your Zumba moves outside the class and onto your own dance floor – and feel sexy doing it, too!
5) Use practice time as walking time
Already have a kid or two you’re driving around to various fall ball activities? Sure, you’d rather wait in the car catching up on Facebook or sipping a pumpkin spice latte, but that’s time better spent doing fast-walking laps around the soccer field or riding a bike around the neighborhood. Better yet, get your other waiting parents to join you and you’ll have your own exercise club.
Keep your summertime activity momentum going as you gear up for fall – and the holiday – season. Your body, your hormones and your fertility future will thank you.
