  • Safa Rifka, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

    Dr. Rifka continued his training in studies as a fellow in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the National institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He has published widely on the effects of hormones on the male and female reproductive systems. Dr. Rifka’s recent professional recognition includes being listed in the Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors 2016. He is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Rifka is originally from Beirut, Lebanon and is fluent in English, Arabic and French.

  • Maurice J. Butler, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

    Dr. Butler, a native of Washington, DC, received his undergraduate education from Harvard University and attended George Washington University Medical School. He completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency, as well as his Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. During his fellowship, Dr. Butler received additional training in In-Vitro-Fertilization (IVF) at the Jones Institute in Norfolk, Virginia, working closely with the team that produced the first IVF baby in the United States. Dr. Butler is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. His recent professional recognition includes being listed in the Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors 2016.

  • Rafat A. Abbasi, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

    Dr. Abbasi received her medical degree from the University of Sind in Karachi, Pakistan. Her residency was at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Towson, MD and her fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility was at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr. Abbasi is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Dr. Abbasi served in the United States Army for ten years and was Chief of Endocrinology at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. She was also the Director of the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Program at the University of Texas Medical Center in Houston from 1988-1989. Inclusive of her practice in Reproductive Endocrinology, Dr. Abbasi was Chair for the Department of Gynecology at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland from 2006-2008. She also has much knowledge and interest in Reproductive Immunology. Dr. Abbasi’s recent professional recognition includes being listed in the Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2016; US News and World Report 2013, and Northern Virginia Magazine’s Top Doctors 2012 and 2015. Dr. Abbasi is fluent in several languages including English, French and Urdu.

  • Preston Sacks, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

    Dr. Sacks graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in his native New Orleans. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. During his training, Dr. Sacks worked with the team at Columbia Fertility Associates and joined the practice in 1992. Dr. Sacks has served as a principal investigator on several clinical trials of innovative fertility medications. Dr. Sacks is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology. His recent professional recognition includes being listed in the Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors 2016 and Northern Virginia Magazine’s Top Doctors 2015.

  • Abbaa Sarhan, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

    cfa-profile-pic-croppedDr. Abbaa Sarhan is the newest addition to Columbia Fertility Associates, joining the practice in 2011. She obtained both her undergraduate degree and Medical Doctorate at the George Washington University in Washington, DC where she graduated with Distinction as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha national honor societies. Dr. Sarhan remained at the George Washington University for residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology and earned multiple awards for academic and clinical excellence as an Administrative Chief Resident. She then pursued fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the historically renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine in Norfolk, Virginia, the site of the first IVF baby in the U.S. Dr. Sarhan is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She has teaching faculty appointments as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at George Washington University and Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Sarhan grew up locally in Rockville, Maryland, and is excited to practice in her hometown area. She is fluent in Arabic and enjoys taking care of a diverse patient population.┬áHer recent professional recognition includes being listed in the Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors 2016.

  • Sammi Sun, Ph.D. – Lab Director

    Dr. Sammi Sun received his Ph.D. in Reproductive Biology from Louisiana State University. He is a board certified High Complexity Clinical Laboratory Director both in Embryology and Andrology. Dr. Sun has extensive experience in all aspects of human IVF including ICSI, Assisted Hatching and Embryo Biopsy. Dr. Sun has directed the laboratory team at Columbia Fertility Associates since 2000. Dr. Sun was born in China and has acted as a technical consultant to several IVF centers throughout China. Dr. Sun is fluent in English and Mandarin.
